RIP Slingin' Sammy Baugh

The last remaining member of the inaugural Pro Football HOF class, Slingin' Sammy Baugh, died tonight in Texas at the age of 94. Sammy's jersey #, 33, is the only number officially retired by the Redskins. A TCU alum, Baugh played quarterback, defensive back, and punter for the Redskins starting in 1937; Baugh's NFL record for punting average, set in 1940, remains an NFL record to this day. In 1943, Sammy led the NFL in passing yards on offense, interceptions on defense, and punting avg on special teams. Sammy is widely credited with being the first true "passing QB", in that the forward pass was fully featured in the offensive game plan.

As Redskins fans, I'm sure we'll all keep Sammy and his surviving family members in our thoughts and prayers.

Rest In Peace, Sammy -- A great football pioneer and a great Redskin. You made us proud.

No doubt.

Not just a 2-way threat, but a 3-way threat. How rare are those??

Sad.

I wish I would have known he was in Lubbock when I was there… but it seems he liked flying under the radar in his post NFL days.

Yes, I am a nerd.

Yeah,

he pretty much spent his final few decades at his private ranch.

Sammy probably died when he saw how bad this team sucks

oops, that’s not going to get me any brownie points…

Heck,

they won today by a score that wouldn’t seem out of place in Sammy’s era?

Ceci n'est pas une signature.
