Injury update

Per Redskins Insider Cornelius Griffin, Santana, Marcus Washington, Captain Smoot, and Pete Kendall missed practice today, although Coach expects them all to play. Carlos Rogers is done due to the busted ACL and MCL. Though he is not yet officially on IR, it's just a matter of time. Three of the above players were missing due to hamstrings, which is getting to be a big effing problem:

"It's an injury that plays with your head a little bit," Heyer said Wednesday.

If that's true, the Washington Redskins have been playing a lot of head games lately. At least 17 players, including some who are no longer with the team, have had hamstring issues since the start of training camp. They've ranged from major pulls to minor tweaks. The problem became so chronic that coach Joe Gibbs last week ordered an inquest, leading to several in-house initiatives aimed at getting the set of muscles behind the thigh bone to stop aching so much....

The Redskins have lost six man-games due to hamstring injuries, but that doesn't begin to tell the story. A hamstring injury lingers and lingers, hampering especially receivers and defensive backs -- players whose games rely on speed -- long after they've been cleared to play.

Uhm, I don't know what a "man-game" is but it sounds like the kind of thing NFL teams don't want to lose, even if I might. It doesn't sound fun at all.

On a related note, I've been guilty of repeating the conventional wisdom that there isn't anything in the NFL rulebook that prevents women from playing football. I don't know where I scooped that conventional wisdom, because now I'm starting to suspect that it is bogus. I checked out the NFL rules digest from NFL.com, and it clearly does address gender:

Each team is permitted 11 men on the field at the snap...

With the exception of the last two minutes of either half, the offensive team, while in the process of substitution or simulated substitution, is prohibited from rushing quickly to the line and snapping the ball with the obvious attempt to cause a defensive foul; i.e., too many men on the field.

So I think if they did allow women to play, but didn't change the rule, there'd be nothing preventing you from putting, like, 20 women on the field so long as there isn't a rule preventing women from playing, period (gross!). I don't think we're using our cheerleaders effectively at all, if that's the case. Anyways, I'll let reader(s) chew on that.

On zee competition, they've just lost a player to injury for the season:

Sean Considine's season is over...

It looks like we'll get our wish from earlier this week. Your starting safeties are going to Brian Dawkins & Quintin Mikell. Frankly, from what I've seen from Q this year I have to think that he and Dawkins will be an upgrade over he and Considine.

Don't know how big an impact this will have on the game this weekend, though from the sounds of it at least a few Eagles fans think the team is better off with Mikell in Considine's stead. I guess we will find out.

MAN GAME
total number of games not played by any player(s) due to(in this case)hamstring injuries. AKA man hours in the real world. Translated it would be 6 man hours lost.

So like...
Moss misses six games due to a hamstring injury, that'd be 6 man-games.

Question to ask, though, is whether or not man games count for everyone or only for starters (like a lost man-game is a lost start). I feel like we've also lost a lot of backups to injury, but that doesn't hurt us as much. With 11 guys on offense and defense -- and as far as I can tell we haven't lost special teamers to hamstrings -- 16 games in a regular season, if it only applies to starts that is 6 man-games lost on 352 man-starts on offense and defense. That's less than 2% of our total starts lost, though it is only around halfway through the season. Then again, not all man-games are created equal.

Anyways, thanks for the heads up.

Be interesting to see
how many man games we lost to all injuries total. To date weve played 8 games that would be 176. Then throw another stat in that shows starters playing injured, like for example moss playing with his groin injury for how many games.

Guess we could include back ups if they to were supposed to start but couldnt because of injury in another seperate stat.

Ok i might have taken that to far.
